This Module is divided into two fundamental components of a piece of artwork. First, the elements of its physical composition are accounted for; the use of line (both real and implied), the definition of shape (both geometric and organic), the appearance of mass (in two and three dimensions), and techniques for creating illusionistic space, such as linear and atmospheric perspective. The second category is completely dependent on the viewer's perception and reception. This means the observation of sensory aspects such as time and motion, light, color, and texture.

Module Outcomes:

• Explain technical devices used to render space and volume in painting.

• Discuss the physical properties and relationships of color.

• Show how visual elements convey expressive and symbolic meaning in a work of art.

• Indicate how artists use visual elements to create optical and illusionistic effects.

• Use basic tools of visual analysis to explain a work of art.
